Coverage
Private therapy sessions are not currently covered by the BC Medical Services Plan.
Some extended health plans may cover a limited amount of sessions and it is usually helpful to call and confirm this with the insurance provider prior to the initial session. When speaking with your insurance provider, inform them of your desire to attend sessions with a therapist who is a Registered Marriage & Family Therapist (RMFT), Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) and ask them if these designations are covered under your insurance plan.
Confidentiality
All therapy sessions are conducted with the expectation of confidentiality. The therapist is legally bound, however, to break confidence if:
- The therapist believes that you will harm yourself, because the therapist has a duty to protect you;
- The therapist believes that you will harm another person, because the therapist has a duty to warn them;
- The therapist believes a child is being abused emotionally, physically, sexually or through neglect, because the therapist has a duty to report it;
- The court subpoenas* the therapist's records, because the therapist is required by law to comply.
*As a marriage and Family Therapist, I do not take sides and therefore do not do assessments for the courts.
